Online Nurse Continuing Education Programs

As a registered nurse, you’ll likely be required to complete a number of continuing education hours every year in order to retain your nursing license. While some states still don’t have continuing education regulations, most require nurses to submit paperwork proving that they’ve completed between five and thirty hours of additional training every year.

How do you qualify for these continuing education hours? All state have their own guidelines, but most have a list of classes you can take or studying you can do in order to keep your nursing license. Programs run throughout the year to allow you to take classes when it makes sense for you, and some facilities will even provide training for their employees, so you don’t have to find classes on your own.

But if you do have to find continuing education on your own, it is important to make sure that it is accredited. Accreditation is a term most often used in conjunction with colleges and universities, and the government keeps track of accredited schools to help college students find legitimate programs. The term accreditation can also extend to other programs as well, however. In nursing continuing education, a class that is said to be accredited is one that has been approved by you state’s licensing board.

Why is this important? First and foremost, if the continuing education course is not accredited, you work receive credit for doing the work. In some states, independent study is permitted for at least some of the continuing education hours you need to retain your license, so some courses may qualify under those rules. However, in order for you to ensure that you get credit for the course, it is important to see that they have been approve.

The second reason you should want to participate only in accredited courses is that this is the best way to ensure that you’re receiving a high-qualify education. Anyone can put a course online to sell to nurses and nursing students. That doesn’t mean that the course information is accurate, advanced, or technologically up-to-date. When you spend money on a continuing education course, isn’t it best to know that this course is going to be worth your time? If you aren’t learning anything, what’s the point of continuing education?

The best way to find accredited continuing education courses is to check with your state’s licensing board. Every state had different rules regarding continuing education, but all states can provide you with information on where to find courses that will help you earn hours toward retaining your nursing license.

Consider all of your options carefully and try courses where you can learn new and interesting things whenever possible, rather than taking courses that cover material you’ve already learned while on the job or as part of your degree course. Continuing education can be a great opportunity to learn more about your profession and become a better nurse.
